ROBERT EDWARD JEFFERSON, SR was born on August 25, 1905. He was the fourth child of Joseph and Lena. He lived with the family on their farm until the 1930’s, when he moved to South Philadelphia. He lived on St Alban’s place, in the heart of a prominent African-American neighborhood. It was in Philadelphia that he met Catherine Brown of Petersburg, Virgina.

Catherine had moved to Philadelphia from Petersburg to find employment. She went to Berean institute and studied to be a textile machine operator. She and Robert met at a party in South Philadelphia.

Robert and Catherine were married on October 20, 1938. From South Philadelphia, the couple moved to the Brewerytown section of the city, settling in a house on Oxford Street.

Robert and Catherine had four children.
